Pages with no H1: why the main headline matters
In your audit this appears as Pages missing the H1 heading
The page has no <h1> heading. This is the main headline, the one saying what you are looking at, inside the page's content.
Why it matters
The <h1> is the headline of the content, just like the one on a newspaper article. It helps a search engine confirm what the page is about, and above all it helps a person get their bearings in two seconds.
Where it shows most is accessibility: someone using a screen reader jumps from heading to heading to get a sense of the page. With no h1, that navigation starts blind.
The <title> lives in the <head> and shows in Google and on the tab. The <h1> shows inside the page. They may look alike, but they are not the same tag and do not do the same job.
Where it usually comes from
- Themes that make the logo an
h1on every page and leave the real headline as anh2. - Designs where the headline is an image, with no text behind it.
- Visual builders that lay out with
<div>and styles instead of headings.
How to fix it
- Put one
<h1>per page, carrying the real headline of that content. - Use headings for their meaning, not their size: if you want it to look smaller, change it with CSS, not by demoting it to
h3. - Respect the hierarchy:
h2for sections,h3for what hangs off them, without skipping levels.
