Noindex pages: why they never show in Google

The page is explicitly asking search engines not to include it in their results: it carries the noindex instruction, either in a meta tag or in a server header.
Why it matters
Because it works. A page with noindex will not appear in Google however good it is, however many links it earns and however much you work on it. It is the quietest and most complete way to disappear.
And here is the problem: often nobody set it on purpose. It is the number one cause of "my site does not show up in Google", and it has usually been there for months with nobody looking.
WordPress has a checkbox, "Discourage search engines from indexing this site", meant for while you build. It gets ticked before launch and nobody remembers to untick it on the day you go live.
When it is the right thing
It is not always a mistake. It is correct on thank-you pages after a form, internal search results, carts and private areas, or staging versions. The question is not whether there is a noindex, but whether this particular page should have one.
How to fix it
- If the page should appear in Google, remove the
noindextag from the<head>(or theX-Robots-Tagheader from the server). - In WordPress, check Settings → Reading and your SEO plugin's configuration.
- Afterwards, request indexing in Google Search Console rather than waiting for it to come back on its own.
Blocking in robots.txt is different: that prevents crawling, not indexing. In fact, if you block a page in robots.txt, Google cannot read its noindex and may end up indexing it anyway.
